Gerg Wins World Cup Parallel In Mammoth
Mammoth Mountain., CA, November 28, 1997--The Women's World Cup got off to a strong start today. A blizzard had blown through the High Sierras earlier in the week, leaving between three and five feet of fresh snow on Mammoth's slopes.
Hilde Gerg of Germany racked up her first World Cup victory of the '97-98 season in Friday's parallel. The event was a near sweep for the German team, with Martina Ertl placing second and Katja Seizinger placing fourth. Alexandra Meissnitzer of Austria, came in third. No Americans competed in this event.
The parallel is a hybrid between slalom and giant slalom which features slalom gates and giant slalom gates alternately in each race. The event has caused controversy, as only the top 32 athletes from the World Cup start list are eligible to compete.
Women's competition continues on Saturday with the super G. This event was originally scheduled for Thanksgiving Day, but the snowstorm forced officials to delay the race until Saturday.
