| The town of Špindlerův Mlýn is situated at the altitude of 715-850 meters above
the sea level and is surrounded by mountain ranges up to 1200 meters high. An
important date for the settlement was 17th July 1793 when a writ approving the
construction of St. Peter’s Church addressed to the mill of the reeve Spindler
was issued by the emperor Franz Ist. This can be considered the origin of
Špindlerův Mlýn. The town has been considered a popular tourist destination
since 1865. It became famous for its spa pools. There was a heated bathing
place; patients were healed, among other spa procedures, with the fresh mountain
air, long walks, etc.
Winter in the Giant Mountains (Krkonoše) has always been rough. Using
snowshoes, bobsleigh sledges and other mountain gear has proven a necessity. It
was in 1893 when the first people began skiing in the area. They were count
Harrach’s foresters. It was at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of
the 20th century when the first skiing societies were established.
Today the town of Špindlerův Mlýn is a centre of sport, recreation and
congress tourism. The pleasing town has 1300 inhabitants and is situated in the
heart of the Giant Mountains National Park (established 1963). Situated 150
kilometres from Prague it is easily reachable by car. Parking is possible at
several central car parks; many hotels have their own parking facilities, too.
There are more than 250 hotels ranging from * to **** with approximately ten
thousand beds offering variety of free time activities.

Skilifts of the ski-area Svatý Petr have total capacity of 8.990 persons per
hour. A lot of important sport events take place each year here. During this
winter season you can see 3 World cup competitions, one European cup and a lot
of other sport events. 3 chair lifts and 5 ski lifts are open during winter
season directly in area.
By air: The nearest international airport take place in Prague-Ruzyně,
140 km from Špindlerův Mlýn. There is also a small airport in Vrchlabí,
13 km from Špindlerův Mlýn.
By car: The best way to go there from Austria and Italy is to take the
motorway via Vienna, Bratislava, Brno, Prague or via Salzburg, Linz, Dolní
Dvořiště, České Budějovice, Prague. If you travel from Western Europe,
you can take the motorway via Munich, Regensburg, Rozvadov, Plzen, Prague
oder via Nuremberg, Rozvadov, Plzen, Prague. Then it takes only 1.5-2 hours
to go from Prague to Špindlerův Mlýn. Either you can use the motorway to
Mladá Boleslav, then go out from the motorway and follow the direction
Jičín, Nová Paka, Vrchlabí, Špindlerův Mlýn. Or you can use the motorway
to Poděbrady, then go out from the motorway and follow the direction Jičín,
Nová Paka, Vrchlabí, Špindlerův Mlýn.
