Thanks to its "Glacier de la Grande
Motte" located at the high altitude
of 3600 meters, Tignes has been one of the
best all-year-round ski-areas in the Alps
since the 1970's. In the winter-time, the
slopes can be reached on an interconnect
route from Val d'Isere via the Bellevarde
mountains. Both skilift-systems are part
of the famous and vast "Espace Killy"
operation. Tignes is very popular with the
many national teams which train there during
summer and fall and puts on several snow
competitions throughout the winter. In February
1992, the Olympic freestyle events were held
there with great success. The initial Alpine
World Cup races in Tignes were organized
in 1988 and the opening of the men's World
Cup started there in November 1994. During
the 1993/94 season, Italy's Deborah Compagnoni
celebrated her first World Cup success by
winning the GS in the French resort.
In October 1996, the skiers competed on the "Grande Motte" for the first time with thousands of sun-splashed spectators cheering the GS and the Parallel-races. |
