In becoming one of top ski racing stars in the late 1990's, Luc Alphand
also put his home area, Serre-Chevalier, on the tourist map as one of the
most attractive ski areas in the southern French Alps. A traditional all-season-resort,
Serre-Chevalier is located only a few minutes away from the historic town
of Briancon, famous for its spectacular fortress still used by the French
Mountain Division. Italy's border is just a few km's up the road. With
its 250 km of marked trails and its apres-ski facilities, the Serre-Chevalier
area is now a popular destination resort in and around the country. The
visitors appreciate the lush forest, the largest in Europe, which surrounds
the different villages and a good lift system which links the various resorts
between them. Two women's World Cup races have been held there, a downhill
in 1991 won by Austria's Petra Kronberger and a slalom in 1996 taken by
Claudia Riegler from New Zealand. |
