Located in a sheltered, sunny valley in the spectacular Brenta Dolomites, Madonna di Campiglio is one of the foremost ski areas of the Trento province of Northen Italy. Situated 215 km north-east from Milan but only an hours drive from the Trento-Bolzano highway, Madonna is a very popular destination among week-end skiers. It's very crowded during the Christmas and Easter Holidays and during the yealry World Cup races. its been on the WC calendar since it inception in 1967. Many kinds of alpine events take place on the famous Miramonti slope, in Madonna di Campiglio, including a downhill in December 1975 won by Franz Klammer himself. The "3-Tre" competition, launched in 1949, is the oldest Italian "Classical" ski race. Many former champions have won in the beautiful Tyrolian-style resort which was part of Austro-Hungarian Empire in the last Century. Since 1981, only slaloms were held on the steep run -- surrounded by more than ten thousand spectators screaming for their ski-god: Alberto Tomba. The triple Olympic champion won there three times - But super-Swede Ingemar Stenmark topped that, as a five-time winner in the slalom. The Stenmark won the first of his 86 World Cup races there in December 1974.
