Norway has been a part of the World Cup tour since 1968 including a dozen
resorts from Oslo to Narvik until today. Its ski team has produced some
of the finest champions of the 1990's including the two Overall World Cup
winners Kjetil Aamodt and Lasse Kjus and the slalom Olympic Champion of
1992. It has also developed an attractive "Classic" on the demanding
slopes of the Kvitfjell area where the speed events of the 1994 Olympics
and the 1996 World Cup finals took place. Designed by Bernhard Russi, the
"Whiteface" downhill course is one of the most challenging and
spectacular on the tour. Situated a little more than an hour drive north
from downtown Lillehammer on the road to Trondheim, the little village
of Kvitfjell has the potential to grow into a vacation resort for summer
and winter if more hotels and facilities are built at the base of the mountains.
So far, only one large hotel has been built in that place which is a candidate
for the 2005 FIS World Championships with Hafjell and Lillehammer. |
