Situated 75 miles (121 kilometers) west of Denver on the road to Vail,
Copper Mountain Resort is the highest stop on the international circuit
with its 9,712 feet (2 926 meters) elevation at the base and 12,313 feet
( 3 767 meters ) at the summit.
The area has boomed in the past two decades
- and it's not over yet. The new owner of
Copper Mountain, Intrawest, has decided to
invest an impressive half a billion dollars
in the coming 5-10 years in various improvements
and new buildings which will give it a new
dimension.
So far, Copper can handle over 30,000 skiers
per hour with its 21 lifts and its 2,400
acres (985 hectares) of skiing terrain. It's
also an attractive final destination in the
summer with its numerous outdoor activities
and its spectacular mountain trails. There
are many interesting destinations in the
neighborhood such as Leadville, one of the
oldest and most famous mining towns in the
Rocky Mountains. The drive from Copper Mountain
to Aspen over the Independence Pass is a
must for all the visitors in the area.
The undulating slopes which host
the races
look smooth but the altitude
makes it very
challenging for the skiers. In
1976, many
racers had to be supplied with
oxygen masks
at the finish line after their
GS runs -
yet it was Germany's veteran
Rosi Mittermaier
who won both competitions here
two weeks
after her Olympic triumph in
Innsbruck.
