A perfectly organized athlete who trains extremely hard to stay at the top, Pernilla Wiberg is a great champion in big events. From 1991 to 1999 she clinched six gold medals in three specialties beside her 23 World Cup wins in all five events despite many injuries. The Swede has already won five titles at Olympics and FIS World Championships when she was finally able to conquer her first Overall World Cup in 1997. The Scandinavian skier was very near to get it already in 1994 when she suffered a bad crash in downhill during the finals at Vail. She could not prevent Switzerland's Vreni Schneider to conquer her second Crystal globe. After winning the slalom and the combined World titles at Sierra Nevada, Spain in 1996, "Pilla" found back her best rhythm in 1997. Winning nine events in all specialties except GS, she took a great revenge in Vail when she received her first Overall World Cup. In Colorado, she also became the first and only Swede ever to win a World Cup downhill. Yet new injuries and a lack of motivation prevented her to remain at her best level the following year. She had to rest several weeks to recover before the Nagano Olympics where she gained silver in downhill. A crash at the end of the first slalom run cost her the gold medal in the combined. But nobody could beat her in that event in 1999 at Vail where she also came in 2nd in slalom. Pernilla travels and practice with the Norwegian to stay close to her boy-friend, a trainer in that team. She moved to Monte Carlo where she finds excellent conditions to take care of her physical conditions in the beautiful stadium Louis II. A great star in Scandinavia, Wiberg works also hard for a dozen of companies which has signed promotional deals with her. She even designs her own line of jewelry.
With all due respect to the other superstars, Pernella Wiberg has racked up more victories and medals coming back from adversity than any other female skier in the sport. With six gold medals in three different events since 1991 and the Overall World Cup victory in 1997, Pernilla Wiberg is the most dominating performer on the women's World Cup tour since the departure of the Katia Seizinger and Deborah Compagnoni. The Swede has also won 23 World Cup events in all five alpine disciplines during an impressive career that's been marred by serious injury.
In fact, last season was yet another comeback for the 29-year-old Wiberg who now lives in Monte-Carlo. Plagued by health problems in the months before the 1998 Nagano Olympics, Pernilla was not able to compete on the same level that gave her the Crystal Globe after winning eight events. She scored a silver medal in downhill at Hakuba behind Germany's Katja Seizinger, but fell in the combined slalom while fighting for the combined title.
After a slow start last season, Wiberg regained her exciting style at Maribor, Slovenia and won her 14th World Cup slalom. She went on to take silver in slalom at the Vail world championships. Pernilla also dominated the combined in Colorado, finishing ahead of the 1997 winner, Austria's Renate Goetschl for the gold medal.
Since September 1998, Pilla trains with the Norwegian Ski Team to be close to her boyfriend, Bodvar Bjoerke, a trainer for Norway. A very strong minded athlete she also has been successful in the business of product endorsement. Pernilla trains remarkably hard in the off-season. Wiberg feels good enough to compete for more gold at the 2002 Olympics at Salt Lake.
