With her 54 victories in GS and slalom from 1984 to 1995, Vreni Schneider is by far the best technical skier in the history of the World Cup. A three-time winner of the Overall title, the modest and reserved athlete from the eastern part of Switzerland also won six gold medals at Olympics and FIS World Championships from 1987 to 1994.

Daughter of a shoe-maker who worked in the tiny village of Elm, Vreni lost her mother when she was a teenager. Taking care of her household, she worked hard to achieve her dream of ski racing. In 1984 Vreni finally made the national team and won her first race during the 1984/85 season.

But she didn't make the powerful Swiss team for the FIS World Championships in Bormio and had to wait 1987 to win her first gold medal in GS. A double Olympic champion in 1988 at Calgary, she crushed her rivals during the 1988/89 winter, winning 13 technical races out of 14 and one combined. With 14 successes in one season, the popular Swiss leader set an new record: the previous one was held by a man -- Sweden's Ingemar Stenmark with 13 wins in a single season in 1978/79.

Schneider retired at 30 after another World Cup win at Bormio where she beat Germany's Katja Seizinger in winning the last slalom of the season. Vreni had not only lived her dream, but created new ones. She won eleven World Cups in GS and slalom. How good was Vreni Schneider? Too good for women's skis. Very often, she used the more aggressive men's equipment.
