Perhaps the best way to describe Sarah Schleper is "a work in progress."

The gate-runner with the signature blonde curls flaring out from under a headband of some sort enjoyed the best season of her career last winter, including a World Cup podium in both slalom and GS. Her project is to carry the confidence into this Olympic season. "I think shefll be strong in both events; itfs just a matter of her pulling together her strengths," according to Head Coach Marjan Cernigoj.

Comment: "It was a good year. I think I proved a lot to myself, that I can ski at the top level and I can really challenge. I know I have to work on my consistency -- thatfs always a big part -- from race to race, but when I attack I know I can do it. You canft hold back on the World Cup. You gotta go for it...and I need to ski in the races like I ski in training."

Start-up: Gift skis for her second birthday got Schleper into skiing; when she was 11, she decided to try racing. She was 16 when she reached the World Cup - in a race in Vail. She was silver medalist in slalom at the e97 World Junior Championships and raced in the e98 Olympics, but a broken leg sidelined her for the e99 Worlds in her hometown.

Coachquote: "Sarah had a good year but she can do better, and she knows wefll be expecting it. She expects it, too. I see the same kinds of results, only now she should be more consistent. One more summer of good training and it should happen automatically. Itfs just a natural process. Her curve has been going up and up every year. Wefre expecting a good year." -- George Capaul

Coachquote II: "[In e00], she scored almost all of her races between 15 and 30th place, with a couple of exceptions. But this past season, Sarah had almost nothing between 15-20 or 15-30; it was almost all between the podium and 15th place." -- Ibid.
