A two-time junior world champion in giant slalom, Karin Roten was called the successor of the legendary Vreni Schneider, the greatest technical skiers in recent years. Karin was only 20 when she won her first medal in GS at FIS World Championships in Sierra Nevada, Spain .

One month later, she celebrated her first World Cup success at Lillehammer during the 1996 Finals. She was still on a roll during the 1996/97 season: in February 1997, she clinched two more medals at Sestriere, in slalom and GS but had trouble making the top-3 on the World Cup.

Roten's results slipped a year later when a viral infection kept from training. She still managed to score some top-10 finishes but didn't contend for a medal at the 1998 Olympics. After recovering her health during the summer 1998, Karin trained intensively under Jean Pierre Egger, the physical trainer of former athletic World Champion Werner Gunthor and now in charge of the preparation of the OM Marseille football(soccer) club.

Roten learned to ski with her father Kurt, a ski instructor at Leukerbad along with her three brothers. An excellent technical skier, Karin enjoys hard and demanding slopes like Veysonnaz where she won her second slalom in December 1998. She was 2nd later that month in Semmering, but faded afterwards. Karin finished far from the podium at the Vail World Championships but held her first seed position in the technical events.

During the summer, Karin announced that she wanted to give up ski racing, at least for a year, and have a baby with boyfriend, Armin Meier, a professional cycling champion. The ski world looks forward to "mama" Roten's return.
