Corinne Rey-Bellet achieved a unique double-win in St Anton, Austria, when
she captured a Super-G only a few hours after celebrating her first World
Cup victory in downhill. It was also the first success for the Swiss team
in the speed events in many years. Her best results before then was a 4th
place in the Veysonnaz downhill a day after crashing on the same course
in another race. Corinne was GS specialist when she started the World Cup
tour in 1991/1992 but only got to the podium once that season. Earlier
in February, she came in 17th at the Olympics in Meribel. She had trouble
for several seasons due to injuries and problems with coaches who didn't
support the younger skiers on the team.
In September 1996, the sensitive Rey-Bellet faced her toughest challenge
when she tore knee ligaments training in Australia. The accident cost her
time and energy, but gave her new motivation. The crash forced her to take
stock and with the help of a psychologist, she has learned to use her energy
better. Corinne's determination inspired teammates such as Sylviane Berthod
who had a surprising 2nd place in Super-G a week after in Cortina d'Ampezzo,
Italy. At the Vail Worlds, the pressure was on her and could do no better
than 6th in GS. It was an important lesson which should help Rey-Bellet
to more success in the coming seasons.
Switzerland's Corinne Rey-Bellet, who will turn 31 in August, decided last
week to give-up ski racing to focus on her family and enjoy life.
A veteran on the World Cup tour, Rey-Bellet competed since the 1991 season
on the Swiss team and celebrated five major wins in downhill and Super-G.
In fact, she is the only female to have won two competitions on the same
day - in January 1999 when she won a downhill and a Super-G on the same
course in St Anton within a few hours. She finished 10th in the Overall
World Cup standings that winter and reached 15 World Cup podiums in her
career. From 1992 to 2003, she took part in four Olympics and five World
Championships.
Last February, she crowned
her career in St Moritz in clinching her first and only medal in the downhill
race in which she came in 2nd behind Canadafs Melanie Turgeon.
A great
achievement for the Dynastar skier who suffered once more from a knee-injury
during her last season. In fact, during most of her career, the skier from Les
Crosets had to fight against health problems. In 1996, she severely damaged the
ligaments of her right knee and almost gave up ski racing.
She injured
herself once more a day before the start of the 2003 season in Soelden and she
needed to receive pain killers to compete later-on.
gI don't want to take too many risks with my health now - I'm 30 and I
wish to live a healthy life now!h she explained when she announced her
retirement.
The Swiss leader, who got married last year, lives now with her husband
Gery Stadler, in Abtwil, near St Gallen where he works in a bank. Corinne
plans to study kynesiology this coming summer - the science of the circulation
of energy in a body. She also hope to become soon a mother.
The sensitive and very determined Swiss
team will miss this strong minded athlete who fought hard to reach the top and
achieve her dreams.
