A blistering talent in the technical specialties, Lise-Marie Morerod was
by far the best slalom skier of the early years of the Alpine Ski World
Cup. At 15, she became a Swiss champion in GS by beating the reigning Olympic
Champion Marie Therese Nadig in 1972.
In 1974, Morerod clinched the only Swiss medal at the FIS World Championships
in St Moritz. A year later, she won her first World Cup race on the icy
and the demanding slalom course in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. In the next
three winters Lise-Marie celebrated 23 more victories in GS and slalom
as well as the Overall World Cup in 1977 over the great Annemarie Moser-Proell.
Lise-Marie, nicknamed "Boubou" by her teammates, was almost killed
in terrible car accident in the summer of 1978.
She was only 22, and although she made a valiant comeback, retired in
1980 to try the pro-tour. Morerod became later came a ski instructor. The
first Swiss woman to win the Overall World Cup was a very aggressive racer
who brought slalom skiing top new levels with her attacking style. She
was a mentor to the next big Swiss star -- Erika Hess. |
