One of the most promising junior skiers in Austria, Christiane Mitterwallner had to work hard to stay on the national team. Winning her first World Cup race helped. Christiane injured herself badly during the 1993/94 season in Tignes during a downhill race in bad weather. She tore all the ligaments in her left knee and underwent seven operations.
In fact Mitterwallner needed so much time to recover from this accident that she didn't score a top-10 result before the 1998/99 season. She raced during the 1997/98 winter with a torn meniscus without knowing it. In November 1998, Christian had an encouraging 13th place in the GS at Park City but did poorly in the Super-G at Lake Louise.
The day before the next Super-G at Mammoth Mountain, the Austrian team captain Karl Frehsner told her that she needed a good result to remain on the World Cup team in future. The pressure apparently helped her be more aggressive on the race day. She won the Super-G by defeating stars like Renate Goetschl and Martina Ertl.
Mitterwallner also had some good results in GS but couldn't score at Vail during the FIS World Championships. She didn't finish the race in Colorado. At least, she held onto the first seed in Super-G with a top-10 result in Sierra Nevada.

Her parents run a restaurant at 1500 meters overlooking the village of Reiteralm, near Schladming. When she was a child, Christina had to ski down to the valley each day during the winter to school at Schladming. In summer, she helps her parents run the restaurant.
