A member of the national ski team in 1966, Rosi Mittermaier raced with great pleasure during her entire career. Rosi really had fun in 1976 when she became the first German champion to clinch the Overall World Cup after winning two gold medals at the Winter Olympics in Innsbruck.
An excellent slalom specialist when she started, the German won her first race in 1969. In the following seasons, she faced some ups-and-downs but she never really challenged for Olympic or World titles.
When Austria's Annemarie Proell retired for a year in 1975, the smiling and relaxed Bavarian became more aggressive and was determined to grab her piece of glory from ski racing. Scoring top-results in all events, she dominated that World Cup season in front of Switzerland's Lise-Marie Morerod, the 1977 winner.
At Innsbruck, she almost became the first woman to conquer three gold medals at the same Olympics. After winning her first downhill over the Austrian favorite Brigitte Totschnig, she claimed gold in the slalom. In the GS, raced in a single-run format, she came 2nd behind Canada's Kathy Kreiner by 14/100's of a second. Rosi was still having fun and winning races. She decided the give up ski racing in 1976 to marry her long time boy-friend Christian Neureuther, the best slalom skier in German ski racing.
She also made a lot of money in the following years endorsing products. Her sister Evi was also a successful downhill specialist during the 1970's winning two World Cup races in 1975 and 1978.
