It's kind of a record set by Sweden's Jessica Lindell-Vikarby in Soelden's Opening World Cup race to become the gwinStarh of the Race finishing 7th despite starting 59th position - truly impressive performance for the teenager from Stockholm, competing in her very first World Cup race!

The 18-year-old Scandinavian is the sixth women and the second Swede to receive this gwinStarh prize and 50gr gold given offered by the International Ski Federation (FIS) along with its partner Winterthur Insurance since last winter.
The gwinStarh of the Race Award is presented to skiers having achieved a special performance during a World Cup event. It was given out 21 times during the 2001 / 2002 winter to competitors starting with bib numbers higher than 46 and finishing among the top-15.

The first race of the 2002/2003 season was particularly remarkable for a group of young skiers. Interestingly enough, it finished with a unique triple victory after Norway's Andrine Flemmen, Slovenia's Tina Maze and Austria's Nicole Hosp clocked the exact same total times at the end of their second run.
But the performance of the charming Jessica Lindell-Vikarby was also quite amazing since she beat many favorites including her more experienced teammates Anja Paerson and Anna Ottosson (a gwinStarh of the Race at Are, in January 2002) despite her high start number and the very demanding weather and course conditions.
She clocked the 15th best time in the first windy leg, but apparently she wanted more. Her determination and confidence helped her to move up to 7th place - certainly one of the best results ever in a World Cup race for a newcomer!

Jessica had a hard time believing what happened to her as she was congratulated by her parents who traveled to Soelden to attend her first World Cup appearance.

gThis is wonderful, she said. g I never expected this when we came here to train to Austria earlier this monthh .
gI was already very pleased to qualify to compete here and pretty nervous when we trained here last week. But today everything went fine. I liked the excellent course and the atmosphere here - it was really an exciting race for me. I felt relaxed and I could attack the course the way I wanted. I didn't care about the gusty wind and I skied at my best. I was really proud to make the cut for the second run. I thought I had a chance to do so last week when I found out that I was skiing almost as fast at the leaders in our team. I told myself I could make it here and I gave what I had in meh.
gBut I reached way more than I planned. I was choked after my second run when I saw that I took the lead and that I kept it for a while. It was a great feeling. Now I will certainly race in USA next month, which is just great. If I continue to ski that way, I can start to dream about qualifying for the Worlds at St Moritz. It's incredible - until now, my goal was to improve my level to score some good results on Europa Cup Tour and in the coming Junior World Championshipsh.

Jessica, who grew up in Huddinge, near Stockholm, still attends the gymnasium at Jaerpen and she wants to finish her secondary school before focusing totally on ski racing. She started to ski at 2 with her parents and her models are Croatia's Janica Kostelic and Sweden's Superstar Pernilla Wiberg one of the greatest Champions of the white sport who retired last winter.
