Multi-talented Caroline Lalive, the Ski Team’s No. 1 all-rounder, heads toward her second Olympics cautiously but confidently.

For the last two seasons, Lalive has squeezed World Cup points out of all five events (SL/GS/SG/DH/CO), including a podium in each season in combined. She knows she’ll be one of the Olympic medal favorites in combined but -- with the experience gleaned from the ‘98 Olympics and her personal and professional maturity over the last four years, and despite the ever-draining pre-Games hype -- she’s not intimidated.

Comment: "I’m focusing on giving my best performance on any day and hopefully things will fall into place, and hopefully I’ll be in the No. 1 spot. I’m certainly gonna do everything I can to do my best, which is all I can do - prepare my best and then do my best."

Start-up: With a father who’s Swiss (and raced as a junior), she was on skis at 2 in Switzerland. She was a topflight soccer player as well as ski racer, but when the family moved from Oregon to Steamboat (‘95), Lalive picked skiing.

Journalist? She’s written a weekly column for two seasons for the Denver Rocky Mountain News. "Oh, yeah, it’s definitely the key to my [racing] success," she laughed.

Family escape: Team Lalive went to Maui last spring.
