The French women where the dominating force in the early 1960's at major events like Olympics and World Championships. They also celebrated numerous victories in World Cup races but there wasn't a French women's Overall World Cup champion until 1970. In fact, Michele Jacot, only 18 that winter, is the only French to win the big Crystal Cup in the 20th Century! A smooth slalom specialist in 1968 when she broke in, Michele became a very complete skier in the next two years. She excelled on tough and icy courses. In 1970, Jacot dominated the technical events and also became FIS World Champion in combined at Val Gardena before grabbing the Overall World Cup title. She remained on a very high level in 1971, winning three consecutive races in three disciplines in January. But at the end of the season, she seemed to run out of steam and Austria's more powerful Annemarie Proell, dominated the end of the season. It was the start of an amazing career for the racer from Salzburg who clinched a total of six Overall World Cup through 1979. On her side, the graceful Michele Jacot never regained that level of excellence. She raced until 1976 but had only one more victory when she won a silver medal at the 1974 FIS World Championships. She retired at just 24 years old, became a mother and ski instructor. She now lives and works at the French Ski School in Chamonix.
