Urska Hrovat is the best Slovenian slalom skier since the legendary Mateja Svet. Hrovat has racked up five world cup slalom victories since 1992 as well as a bronze medal at the 1996 FIS World Championships at Sierra Nevada. After an impressive win at Park City in the first slalom of the 1998/99 season, the Ljubljana native rain into problems due to injuries. But Urska was the still best racer from her team at the at Vail World Championships with her 7th place in slalom.
A very aggressive skier, Hrovat excels on hard and difficult courses but she has a hard time staying motivated. She seriously injured her right knee in a GS crash at Cortina d'Ampezzo in January 1997, but worked hard to come back and won the last slalom at the World Cup finals in Crans-Montana in March 1998.
Her entire family in fond of sports: her father Sacha, used to race Grand Prix motorcycles. Her younger sister Hana is also a top tennis player at just 8 years of age. Urska is already planning for life after skiing by buying a coffee-shop in Ljubljana, the áCafe Anticoâ. Her boy-friend Tobias Hellmann, a former skier in the Swedish team, is helping her run it. But right now, Hrovat want a few more good seasons and hopefully slalom victories in her future.
