Trine Bakke was obviously impressed by teammate Andrine Flemmen's early season GS victory at Soelden, Austria. Because Bakke then went out and became the first Norwegian woman to win a World Cup slalom on the demanding hill at St Anton, Austrian site of the 2001 World Championships. In January 1999, the 24-year-old skier from Trondheim made the best out of the very treacherous conditions to beat Sweden's shooting star Anja Paerson. It led to Bakke's second top-3 finish in slalom after a series of 5th places in the previous seasons. A member of National Team since 1994, she finished 19th in the Olympic GS at Lillehammer before focusing more on her slalom. In 1997, she was 8th at Sestriere at the FIS World Championships.
A second place at Saalbach, Austria, at the end of the 1998 season, boosted Trine's confidence and she was shooting for her first win the following winter. Bakke also clinched a bronze medal at Vail behind Zali Steggall of Australia and super-Swede Pernilla Wiberg after clocking the best time in the first leg.
