Trine Bakke was obviously impressed by teammate
Andrine Flemmen's early season GS victory
at Soelden, Austria. Because Bakke then went
out and became the first Norwegian woman
to win a World Cup slalom on the demanding
hill at St Anton, Austrian site of the 2001
World Championships. In January 1999, the
24-year-old skier from Trondheim made the
best out of the very treacherous conditions
to beat Sweden's shooting star Anja Paerson.
It led to Bakke's second top-3 finish in
slalom after a series of 5th places in the
previous seasons. A member of National Team
since 1994, she finished 19th in the Olympic
GS at Lillehammer before focusing more on
her slalom. In 1997, she was 8th at Sestriere
at the FIS World Championships.
A second place at Saalbach, Austria, at the
end of the 1998 season, boosted Trine's confidence
and she was shooting for her first win the
following winter. Bakke also clinched a bronze
medal at Vail behind Zali Steggall of Australia
and super-Swede Pernilla Wiberg after clocking
the best time in the first leg.
A forIn fact, In fact, In fact, In fact, mer cross-country skier, Bakke
soon switched to alpine skiing in search of more excitement. She was also
inspired by her older brother, a former racer. Trine was coached by her
mother, a former dance instructor, and also was a dancer until 14.
