Remarkable. That's Marc Girardelli. Remarkable. Almost everything about the man is, you guessed it, remarkable. The only male skier to win five Overall World Cup 46 races in all events and a total of 13 medals at Olympics and FIS World Championships.

Born and raised in the western part of Austria, Marc focussed early on ski racing with his father Helmut coaching. At 13, he decided to compete for tiny Luxembourg after several disputes with his regional ski federation of Vorarlberg, Austria. In spite of being a one man team, Marc became one of the best racers of all time. And tough! Marc succeeded despite an incredible series of injuries and accidents that would have stopped a lesser man.

Girardelli had a passion to make history in ski racing: Marc reached his personal summit in 1989 when he became the first and only skier to win in all five specialties during the same season.

A slalom specialist at the beginning, he worked hard to become an excellent downhiller in the mid 1980's without speed coaches. He would have won many more races, medals and trophies but for the crashes he suffered in his career.

His comebacks were incredible including his last major success in 1996 when he won the combined at the FIS World Championships. Marc was finally forced to retire in 1997 because of a horribly damaged knee that had been surgically repaired several times. A very articulate person who likes to read and study, Girardelli speaks several foreign languages.

He has also flys helicopters, and is involved in business, including working as a journalist.
