France's Frederic Covili has achieved some impressive performances in recent winters after overcoming some very tough moments in his career. A superb bronze medal winner in giant slalom at St Anton where he beat by 1/100 of a second gThe Herminatorh himself, the 27-year-old-athlete from Les Menuires became the only third French skier since 1967 to clinch the GS World Cup Title in March 2002 after a intense battles against other top specialists such as Sweden's Fredric Nyberg, Austria's Benjamin Raich or Switzerland's Didier Cuche.

The last French GS World Cup champion was Patrick Russel in 1971. In Tyrol, Covili was the first Frenchman to conquer a medal at the Worlds since Killy's Olympic triumph at Chamrousse in 1968!

Two great seasons

A double Junior World Champion in 1994 at Lake Placid (slalom and combined), young Frederic struggles afterwards to properly express his talents after finishing a promising 9th in his first World Cup race, a slalom held at Vail, Colorado. He didn't enter the top-100 in the World Cup standings in the following seasons and he needed the strong support from his coaches to remain on the team.
After switching skis in summer 2000, the shy Covili suddenly found a more aggressive pace - after a series of top-10 results in the early part if the 2000/2001 season, he beat most of the favorites at St Anton when he was 3rd in that exciting GS behind Switzerland's Michael von Grunigen and Norway's Kjetil Aamodt.
He soon confirmed his class by winning the opening GS of Soelden in October 2001 and the gClassicalh GS race at Alta Badia. The previous winner there was his best friend on the team, Joel Chenal, the first French winner in that prestigious Italian competition. There are also room-mates on the World Cup tour!
A few other excellent performances in other events helped him to remain out of reach for his rivals until Flachau where he once more defended successfully his gRed Bibh in a very dramatic second run. In April, he also conquered the National French Title in that specialty in Val d'Isere.

A nice revenge for gFredh

It was a nice revenge for gFredh after his great deception at the Olympics at Park City. He finished far behind the podium that day there after two passive runs.
In fact he lost his momentum and his concentration before the competition when his younger brother Manuel became seriously ill after flying over to Salt Lake City.
Manuel suffers for years from a terrible respiratory sickness and he was exhausted by his long trip over to USA with his parents. He had to by transported to the hospital after his arrival in Utah and his family was very worried by his medical conditions. He made it through - but brother Frederic was out of focus on race day.
Skiing is since ever the greatest passion for Frederic who learned to ski with his mother Micheline, a ski instructor. His father Jean runs a ski shop in Les Menuires, where the 1992 Olympic slalom took place. In summertime, he likes to glide on his windsurf in the south-west of France or ride his bike.
The treacherous GS run at St Moritz should fit him in February 2003 - in 2002, he set one of the fastest times in the first run before making a huge mistake in the second one.
